After obtaining his Masters degree in Economics from  the University of Groningen, Tonko started his career in the financial industry as a Quantitative Fixed Income Analyst at SNS Asset Management. Tonko then joined ABN AMRO, where he held the position of senior portfolio manager asset backed securities. In 2003 Tonko founded Dynamic Credit Partners in New York with his former business partner (James Finkel). In this approach Tonko found in Peter Nethe a natural partner.

Tonko acted as Advisor to the Board of De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) and the Ministry of Finance (MoF), in a range of topics, including the valuation of the ING’s Alt-A mortgage portfolio.

In addition to his Masters Degree in Economics, Tonko attended various courses, including Financial Engineering at the University of Amsterdam and Credit Risk Modeling at Stanford Business School.
